BIOINFORMATICS RESEARCH STATEMENT
To demonstrate that techniques in computation and information sciences can be as useful as laboratory innovations for solving key problems in modern molecular biology:

  • Data generation, the focus in the genome era (1993-2000):
    My research was focused on the enhancement of data throughput with integrated computational methods. Key previous research achievements included my thesis work on computational analysis of microsatellite genotyping data, which produced the TrueAllele software used by DECODE Genetics to genotype the Icelandic population, and my work at Smithkline Beecham (UK) and DNA Sciences (US) that addressed practical issues of production laboratory information management systems (LIMS);

  • Knowledge discovery, the new focus in the post-genome era (2001-present):
    My research now focuses on biomedical data mining and information extraction beyond single genes into complex interaction networks of proteins and other molecules. Current research focuses on in silico approaches to discover and validate bio-molecular interactions and pathways using scientific modeling, literature mining, and integration of heterogeneous data for knowledge discovery.
